Gardens of War. Life and Death in the New Guinea Stone Age. Introduction by Margaret Mead
New York: Random House, 1986.
First Edition.
In 1961 the Harvard University Peabody Museum launched an expedition to film the Baliem Dani of the Central Western Highlands. They succesfully recorded one of the last true intact warrior cultures and in doing so created an ethnographic and visual record of lasting significance. This book is a result of the expedition and remains one of the best accounts of inter-tribal murder, retaliation and open warfare.
