The literary journal Io was founded by Richard Grossinger and Lindy Hough in 1964, a beacon of avant-garde literature and innovative artistry. With its roots in the counterculture movement, Io brought together a constellation of visionary writers and artists, providing a platform for them to challenge conventions and experiment with form and content.
Throughout its run, Io championed works that blurred the boundaries between poetry, prose, and visual art. It became known for publishing daring and unconventional pieces that pushed the limits of expression. Notable contributors included Allen Ginsberg, Robert Kelly, Charles Stein, and Diane Wakoski, among others. While the journal's publication history was relatively short-lived, lasting only until 1974, its influence on the world of literature and art has been enduring.
