Liberty Silk

Paris: no date, circa 1910.

An elegant Edwardian catalogue of hand-printed silk shirts, of oriental and Persian design, organic and of the most beautiful quality.

"No more corsets, bustles and shoulder pads; they will wear soft, supple, fluid draperies, in soft and melted colours. Finally, the garment adapts to the body... shaped according to the silhouette."

-Arthur Liberty

Established in 1875, Liberty & Co. created a legacy of great British textile design, opening its first Parisian store after success at the 1889 Exposition Universale. Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843 -1917) shared his circle with pre-Raphaelite painters Dante Gabriel Rosetti and John Everet Millais, and their mutual delight for the ornamentation of medieval illuminated manuscripts suffused their work with flowers. This catalogue dates from Liberty's move to its grand premises on the Boulevard des Capucines.
