Maurice Sendak was an American illustrator and writer, best known for his award-winning picture books such as "Where the Wild Things Are" published in 1963. Born on June 10, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish-Jewish parents, Sendak's childhood was deeply affected by the loss of many family members during the Holocaust. He developed a love for books at a young age, and decided to become an illustrator after watching Disney's "Fantasia."
Sendak's work often explored the vulnerability of children and their struggle to assert themselves. His art was deeply influenced by music, particularly Mozart's symphonies. Sendak read widely, particularly enjoying the works of Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson and John Keats.
Sendak's illustrations were widely acclaimed and have become iconic in the world of children's literature. His work continues to be celebrated and studied by academics, artists, writers, and collectors of all ages.
Maurice Sendak lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut from 1972 until his death in 2012. His home in Ridgefield is now the site of the Maurice Sendak House & Archive, which is dedicated to preserving his legacy and work. The foundation was established after Sendak's death, as he had no next of kin. Today, visitors can visit the house and archive to see original artwork, manuscripts, and other memorabilia from Sendak's life and career.
Overseen by Maurice Sendak, the collection was published in 1971 by Bodley Head, a prestigious London-based publishing house known for producing high-quality books and prints. This particular edition was limited to just 1,000 copies, making it a rare and valuable addition to any collection of children's literature and illustration.
