Aussie Girls

Melbourne: Melbourne Publishing Company, 1918.

Esther Paterson.

First Edition.

Esther Paterson was born in 1892 in Carlton in Melbourne and was a student at the National Gallery of Victoria from 1907 -1912. Throughout her career, she contributed cartoons to The Bulletin Magazine, Punch, and The Argus and her portraits of civilian officers were exhibited at The Australian War Museum. Her first published collection, Aussie Girls presents a stylish and sultry line up of illustrations of attractive women interacting from on high with doll-size men in uniform. Paterson, niece of John Ford Paterson, was also well known as a landscape painter. In this work she combined her skill as an illustrator and her wit as a commercial artist to amuse post-war Australian society, now used to seeing women in more assertive and independent roles. In 1966, Paterson was awarded a silver medal in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the community when she became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
