The fourteen illustrated leaves in ˜The Little Mermaid' are by a skilled unrecorded artist, stated as 'A. Maynard' on the title page. The fine steel-point drawings are executed with balance and competence in a neoclassical style. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: 'To my mother from H.C.S.'.
Original illustrated manuscript dated 1856, 36 pages, frontispiece and decorated title-page with 12 original illustrated leaves, oblong quarto, bound in beautiful nineteenth-century gilt tooled limp green morocco, some darkening at the gutter edge, in exceptionally fine condition.
