Rare French edition of Kipling's story decorated with twenty-nine hand-coloured pochoir plates by leading Scottish book illustrator, Jessie King (1875-1949). Of particular interest is the remarkable snakeskin binding by Rene Kieffer (1875-1964) with matched oval gilt blocked cameos of lovers, designed by Kieffer in collaboration with the modernist tastemaker and artist, Pierre Emile Legrain. Other beautiful examples of shark and snakeskin bindings by Legrain and Kieffer appear in Alistair Duncan's Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding (London, 1989).Item #1047
