This book was a collaborative effort between Ida and her mother Isobel, who wrote the story. There is "a quite discernible air of growing self-assurance ... elves were evolving into her own distinctive creation and her dramatic use of silhouette was emerging as a major compositional device" (Muir and Holden, p. 102).
