ALSTON, J.W

Hints to Young Practitioners in the study of Landscape Painting Illustrated by Five Engravings intended to show the Different Stages of the Neutral Tint

London, Longman, 1804

Octavo, rare in original boards with label, some wear to edges.

Scarce early manual of topographical painting, with five handcoloured plates, giving practical advice on all aspects of landscape painting including the portrayal of trees, horizons, sky, water and buildings at various times of the day under a range of climatic conditions. It is therefore of special interest for the history of topographical painting, dating as it does from the great voyage period; the style of painting that it prescribes is also immediately recognisable as that which was practised by so many colonial artists who would have undergone such classical training. It was a popular book: this is the third edition.
